Barcelos

Barcelos was the first Capital of the Amazonas from 1728–1758. It is famous for white and sandy beaches, ornamental fish and the highest waterfall in Brazil.

Barcelos is about 400 km northwest from Manaus.

Slow cargo boats takes about 24 to 30 hours travel to reach the city, leaving from the Porto de São Raimundo in Manaus. The return trip takes less. Tickets cost about 125-160 R$ for deck space (where you can hang a hammock), and 350-450 R$ for a 3 person cabin. Some boats continue along to São Gabriel da Cachoeira and Santa Isabel do Rio Negro.
