Făgăraș

Făgăraş, a town of about 35,000 people located half way between Braşov and Sibiu, is known mainly for its medieval fortress and relative proximity to the spectacular Southern Carpathian mountains.

By bus

As Făgăraş is on the main road between Braşov and Sibiu it is reached by very frequent buses from both of them (travel time one hour-one hour and half). A few buses from Sighişoara (two and a half hours away) also exist. Some schedules are available on autogari.ro

By train

Făgăraş is reached by five-six commuter trains daily from Braşov (travel time of around one hour 40 minutes). Timetables can be found on rail operator CFR's website.

The town is small enough to be visited on foot.

  A major medieval fortress built in the 14th century (later one of the palaces of the Transylvanian princes) with a surprisingly well-preserved initial structure. It also houses a museum with history, ethnography and art collections

• Saint Nicholas Church

  A Orthodox church built in 1697-1698 in the famous Brâncovenesc architectural style.

Accommodations are available in a few guesthouses/small hotels, with prices ranging 65-225 lei/night.

• Sâmbăta resort (20 km south-west of town) is a good base for hikes into the Făgăraş massif.
