Hov

You can travel to Suðuroy by the ferry Smyril which has 2-3 daily departures from Tórshavn, or by the helicopter which has 2-3 weekly departures from several destinations in the Faroe Islands. In order to get to Hov from the ferry port Krambatangi or from the heliport in Froðba, you can either drive yourself (you can bring your car with the ferry), take a local buss or call for a cab (taxi). Walking is also an option from the ferry port, if you love walking, it is not that far, but the heliport is further away, it is in Froðba which is on the northern side of the fjord of Trongisvágur (east of Tvøroyri). Hov is located around another fjord, further south than Trongisvágsfjørður.

Go for a walk around the village or visit the area west of the village, where Ergifossur (waterfall) is. There are also lakes there. It is said that Celtic people have lived there before the Vikings. You can go for a walk up to the place where it is said that Viking Chieftain Hovgrímur is buried. You will find a sign pointing to the road and another one after 100 meters or so, pointing towards north, a path goes a part of the way, but you must go a bit further on the grassy field in order to see the two stone piles, where the grave is said to be. There is not much to see of the tomb, only two piles of stone, but the story is interesting and the view is great up there. You can continue, go back to the former main road in Hovsegg, follow the road until you see the curious basaltformations. Somewhere they go zig-zag and somewhere they are like columns. They get most visible next to the road just before the road turns around the mountain. While you walk around in Hov you will probably see different kind of domestic animals like sheep, geese and horses. Hov is known to have many geese.

There are currently (2011) no shops in Hov.

There are currently no restaurants in Hov. If you are a group you may be able to order a meal from the Café Fiskastovan in the harbour (the museum).

There are no bars in Hov. There is a café down in harbour, in the same building where the museum is. In Faroese it is called Fiskastovan. The museum is called "Savnið á Mýri". The café is not open all year, mainly in summertime, but they don't have regular opening hours.

Hov is connected with Øravík by a two lane road tunnel with lights inside. The tunnel opened in 2007. The mainroad goes to the south to the villages Porkeri, Vágur, Lopra, Sumba and other destinations.
