Nagercoil

Historically, Nagercoil was part of the Travancore state and the second most prominent city in that state, after Trivandrum. Until 10 years after Indian independence, Nagercoil remained part of the Travancore state until it was merged into Tamil Nadu in 1956.

Buses are available from Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai.

Autorickshaws, taxis and local buses are easily available.

• Krishnancoil is 1,5 km away from Nagercoil, on the road to Trivandrum.
• The Nagaraja Temple (from which Nagercoil derives its name) has Nagaraja as its principal deity. The devout traditionally offer milk to this "King of Snakes".
• St. Francis Xavier’s Church, in the Kottar locality, was established in 1600 AD. St.Francis Xavier stayed here and the church was built on the land which St. Xavier was awarded by the Venad king.
• Suchindrum and the Thanumalayan Temple are located about 6 km from the city centre. Pilgrims from far beyond the region borders come here for its Hindu shrines. Quite uniquely, this Hindu temple combines the worship of the Trinity of Hinduism (Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma) in Thanumalayan, the presiding deity. Indra, the King of the Devas, traditionally worships at this temple each night.
