Suðuroy

There are two Tourist Information Centres in Suðuroy, they provide information about Suðuroy and rent out houses for tourists. The Tourist Information Centres are in the two largest towns Tvøroyri and Vágur.

Settlements

The public ferry Smyril M/S has 2-3 departures from Tórshavn to Suðuroy every day. The journey takes 2 hours. You can find information about the price of the ticket Strandfaraskip, Suðuroyarleiðin means "Suðuroy Route", which is Smyril. In 2011 the price is 90 kr for an adult and 45 kr for children. You pay only on your way back to Tórshavn. If you bring a car with you to Suðuroy the price is 225 kr for the car incl. the driver, and also here you pay only between Suðuroy and Tórshavn, you don't pay on you way to Suduroy. It is the same for the other islands except for Mykines.
The public helicopter has 2-3 weekly departures to Suðuroy from Tórshavn and Vágar Airport.

Public busses from Bygdaleiðir drive from the ferry port Krambatangi to the southern and to the northern part of the island. To Sumba in the south via Vágur (route 700), Hvalba and Sandvík in the north via Tvøroyri (route 701) and to Fámjin in the west, via Øravík (route 701). Time schedule is on the website: www.ssl.fo.
Rent a car

Fámjin

• Church of Fámjin

  The church of Fámjin was built in 1876. The first Faroese flag is placed on the wall of the church in Fámjin. This flag was made in 1919 by a young student from Fámjin Jens Oliver Lisberg and his friend Emil Joensen, while they were living in Copenhagen. Lisberg died a few years later. The flag is called Merkið and was recognized as the Faroese flag in 1940 by the British government, during the Second World war. The Faroe Islands were occupied by Great Britain while Denmark was occupied by Germany. The Faroese flag is celebrated every year on the 25 April in Fámjin as well as in other villages and town around the country. You can contact the Tourist Information Centre in Tvøroyri, if you wish to visit the church in Fámjin.

• Gorge of the Priest

  Prestgjógv is a beautiful place just outside the village Fámjin, a little bit north of the village. Vertical cliffs and breaking waves just a few steps from the village.

Hov

• HovseggColumnar basalt formations above the village. Somewhere they go zig-zag and somewhere they are like columns. They get most visible next to the road just before the road turns around the mountain.

• Mýri MuseumCafé and Gallery

• The Grave of Viking Chieftain HovgrímurYou can go for a walk up to the place where it is said that Viking Chieftain Hovgrímur is buried. You will find a sign pointing to the road and another one after 100 m or so, pointing towards north, a path goes a part of the way, but you must go a bit further on the grassy field in order to see the two stone piles, where the grave is said to be. There is not much to see of the tomb, only two piles of stone, but the story is interesting and the view is great up there.

• Ergifossur and ErgidalurA waterfall. It is said that Celtic people have lived there before the Vikings.

• The old wooden church

Hvalba

• Fiskieiði, also called Hvalbiareiði, the old harbour of Hvalba, on the west coast, south of Grímsfjall (mountain).
• Norðbergseiði, (Hvalba) also called Á Drátti, vertical cliffs, a natural hole is in the cliff (there is a fence around it), a big rock is lying next to the northern cliff of Grímsfjall, it fell down sometime in the 1980'ies. The cliff down by the sea, just below the parking area at Norðbergseiði there is columnar basalt formations.
• Memorial of Hvalba in memory of people lost at sea. It is on the northern side of the fjord, just before the boat harbour. It is also in memory of people who lost their lives in the coal mines of Hvalba and on Lítla Dímun (island) or who fell down from a mountain side near the village.

Øravík

• Uppi millum StovurOn your way to Fámjin you will see a sign which points to Tingstaðið which is "Uppi millum Stovur", the sign refers to the old Thing (court) of Suðuroy.

• Tjaldavík and TjaldavíkshólmurYou can also follow the old road between Øravík and Hov, the old road starts just before the tunnel to Hov. There is a place called Tjaldavík, this is where people stayed in tents when there was Thing (court) Uppi millum Stovur above Øravík. Just outside the bay of Tjaldavík there is an islet which is called Tjaldavíkshólmur.

Porkeri

• The Church of PorkeriThe church of Porkeri is the oldest church in the island Suðuroy, Faroe Islands. It was built in 1847. The church is small and charming. Black wooden church with grass roof.

Sumba

• Beinisvørð (Beinisvord), a 470-m-high sea cliff, one of the highest of Europe. The road (not the tunnel) between Lopra and Sumba passes by the cliff, around 50 m from the edge.
• Akraberg, a peninsula in the southernmost part of the island, 2 km south east of Sumba. There is a white lighthouse, built in 1909, on the cliff. Friesian people lived here before 1350. Akraberg is a peninsula with a white painted lighthouse with red roof and a couple of red houses. There are high masts here also and lots of birds, when it is season for them, mainly in May to August. From Akraberg there is a beautiful view and a nice place to go for a walk. You can se Flesjarnar, which are a few rocks/islets further south.

Tvøroyri

• Art Gallery Oyggin

  Art Gallery Oyggin is a gallery with art works by Faroese and Nordic artists. There is a beautiful garden around the gallery. In the garden there are many sculptures, most of them are made by the owner of the gallery, Palle Julsgart.

• HvannhagiA beautiful place north east of the town Tvøroyri. There is a lake there and a valley, which is sourrounded by high mountains. Hvannhage has won a price.

• Museum of Tvøroyri, The Doctor's House

  This museum tells the local history of Tvøroyri and the area around Tvøroyri. It is a historical and maritime museum. The building is one of the fist, which was built in Tvøroyri, built in 1852. The villages around Tvøroyri, Frodba and Trongisvagur are older settlements. There are many interesting items and photos in the museum. Contact the local Tourist Information if you wish to visit the museum, it is open on request and on Sunday afternoon 13:00-15:00.

Vágur

The nature around Vágur is beautiful and breathtaking.

• Vágseiði is on the west coast, only around 1 km west of the village. Just follow the main road and drive or walk strait ahead in stead of following the bay. The road goes all the way to Vágseiði, a rocky place where the sea often is rough. There is an old harbor there, which only occasionally is used now, but in the old days it was very important for the fishing boats. They were rowing out from this harbor, when the wind came from the east, north-east or south-east. There used to be many boat houses, but they were blown away in the hurricanes in the 1980s and the 1990s.
• Eggjarnar is on top of a mountain south west of Vágur, a beautiful and breathtaking place with vertical cliffs. It is near Skúvanes. If you wish to go to Eggjarnar just follow the main road in Vágur, turn left when you come to the bottom of the bay, drive or walk a few metres past the Magn petrol station and turn right when you see a road called Eggjarvegur. Follow this road up the hill until you reach Eggjarnar on the top. The road ends up there, only around 20 m from the edge. Be careful not to walk over the edge, and don't leave the road, if there is fog. If the weater is clear or just a bit clear, than you can enjoy the view to the west coast of the southern part of the island, all the way to Beinisvord in the south.

  Ruth Smith (1913-1958) was born in Vágur and grew up here too. Later she moved to Denmark, where she studied art. She is famous in several countries. In the museum you can see art works by Ruth Smith.

• Rappelling in Hvalba

  More info on the website siging.info or on visitsuduroy.fo. The rappelling is on a beautiful cliff, which is called Norðbergseiði. The sea cliff is west of the village Hvalba. The price is for rappelling only (2010). If a boat trip is included it will cost 100 kr more (2010).

  The Broadway Bowling Centre is the only bowling centre in Suðuroy. There are also pool and air hockey tables in the bowling center and a restaurant with permission to serve wine and beer.

  The swimming pool is 12.5 m long. It is open Tuesday and Thursday 16:00-19:00 for adults and children. Friday 17:00-20:00 for children and adults. Saturday 13:00-14:00 for women only, 14:00-17:00 for children and adults.
• Jóansøka is the biggest regional festival in Suðuroy. Jóansøka (Sct. John's Festival or Midsummer Festival) is held every year in the last weekend of June. Every second year Jóansøkan is held in Tvøroyri (odd years) and every second year in Vágur (even years).

Hiking Trips

Hiking trips are popular and can be recommended in Suðuroy. Be aware of fog and make preparations before you go. A mountain can end very sudden and without any warning sign. There are many cairns in Suðuroy, they were used in stead of roads in the old days. There are also guided hiking trips, which the Tourist Information or private persons arrange. Ask on one of the Tourist Information Centres, if you want to know when and where these guided trips are made. More info on the website: www.visitsuduroy.fo.

• Hvannhagi is situated north east of Tvøroyri. One can only reach Hvannhagi by feet or boat. The hiking trip is a great experience, beautiful nature with high mountains around and a lake in a valley in Hvannhagi, great view to Lítli Dímun, and the smallest of the island in the Faroes. The path to Hvannhagi starts above the town, above the hospital towards east. A sign shows you where the path starts. Follow the cairns, but keep the direction towars east, the path splits into two, the left one takes you to Hvalba and the right one takes you to Hvannhagi. You can also ask for directions on the Tourist Information or ask for a guided trip. The price is 200 kr per people if you need a guide. The trip is not suited for people who have problems with walking or are afraid of highs. The first part of the trip is easy, until you reach the gate to Hvannhagi, there it starts to get a little difficult for some people who are not used to climb down a bit steep mountain side. But even if you only walk to the gate to Hvannhagi, it is worth the effort, there you get a fantastic view to the small island Lítli Dímun and feel the peacefulness.

Boat Trips

There are two fast going boats (RIB), which make boat trips along the west coast of Suðuroy or wherever you wish to go. If you are a group it is cheaper, if it is a planned trip the price is around 350 kr. Safety equipment and fishing equipment is available, BBQ is also available. The owner is a retired skipper; he might take you on a boat trip, if he finds the time. He is also the owner of a nice café in Fámjin, and he might take you there or he could tell you how to get there. The guesthouse has three floors, and it has 9 bedrooms: Two double, 5 twin, 1 triple and one single room. Toilets and showers are shared; there are two on the top floor, one on the 1st floor and 1 on the ground floor. Most of the rooms have sea view. There is a nice terrace around the guesthouse. On the 1st floor there is a large kitchen with dining table and a nice living room with TV set with many channels. There is a television in all the rooms with the local Faroese channel. Wireless internet is available. Laundry is on the ground floor (self service). There is no staff in the guesthouse, but the owners live nearby.

  The Scouts house is for groups or for individuals, who don't wish much comfort and wish to travel on a low budget. There is one large room on the ground floor and a few smaller rooms on the 1st floor, where 1-2 persons can sleep. There are no beds, only mattresses. You need to bring a sleeping bag with you. There are kitchen and toilet/bathroom facilities. You can also camp outside the Scouts House.

Be aware that sheep can be on the street, it can be difficult to spot them especially at night and if the sheep is black.
The mountains on the west coast are very steep and suddenly they end and go strait down to the ocean, there are normally no warning signs, so take care! The edge can be a bit loose, don't go too near the edge. Like elsewhere in the Faroes fog can come quite suddenly, be aware of the fog, that you don't go over the edge somewhere.
In some places the ocean can be dangerous, if you stand on the coast in certain places or in certain harbours.
