Urban rail is passenger transportation on rail within urban areas, including rapid transit as well as light rail, funiculars, monorail and other modes of transport. They differ from railways, which typically carry freight and passenger traffic across long distances. However, depending on the country, commuter rail, S-Bahn or RER can be virtually identical to normal trains while mostly fulfilling a urban rail role. Ticketing can be integrated with railways (e.g. in Germany) or separate (e.g. in the US).
