Veria
Veria is a town of Central Macedonia and the capital of the County of Imathia.
Understand
The city lies on the foot of Mt Vermio. In the southeast area flows the Aliakmonas River, the longest river in Greece, with its tributaries, one of which, the Tripotamos, flows through the town. The archaeological site of Vergina, some 12km from the city center is the main tourist draw in the area.
The town is known as the Little Jerusalem because of the numerous byzantine and post-byzantine churches that it has (approximately 48 saved till today and 72 initially). Veria has a very long history dating from antiquity and was one of the cities that St. Paul the Apostle visited during his second trip to Greece, in the 1st century AD.
Orientation
is the city's main thoroughfare. It is nicknamed “the balcony of Veria” for its panoramic position on a slope in the east side., located just behind Elias Square, is the ancient Christian district with narrow cobbled streets and a number of small stone churches. Many of the old houses have been renovated and transformed into museums.
is the former Jewish quarter and undoubtedly the most picturesque part of the city. It has quaint Ottoman-style houses with wooden balconies overlooking Tripotamos River which flows below. The small synagogue still stands in a narrow line. According to the New Testament, Paul the Apostle went to the Barbouta synagogue to try to convert the Jews in the year 55.

Thessaloniki International Airport "Macedonia" is the closest international airport, located 88 km (55 mi) northeast of Veria.
By rail
Veria is linked to Thessaloniki by the Thessaloniki-Edessa railway, with connections to Athens and Alexandroupoli.
By bus
Veria is also connected to more than 500 local and national destinations via the national coach network (KTEL). The is located just north of Elias Square.
By road
Veria is connected to the motorway system of Greece and Europe through Egnatia Odos, the Greek part of the European route E90.

Folklore MuseumIt is housed at the old mansion of Sarafoglou. The museum focuses on the folklore history of the area, highlighting the rich background of the habits of the citizens of Veria. The material of the museum is of great interest, while at the same time it is housed in an old mansion which allows you to see the architecture of the town from the inside, too.

Holy Monastery of Panagia DovraThe monastery is built in idyllic scenery which is surrounded by dense vegetation and is just 5 km away from Veria. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin and dates back to the 12th century.
Holy Monastery of Panagia SoumelaThe monastery was built in 1951 on the slopes of Vermio and houses the wonder-working icon of the Virgin and Evangelist Lucas as well as the heirlooms that have been transferred from the original monastery which is on the Mount Melas in Trapezounta of Pontos.

Fishing, kayaking, canoeing, cycling (bikes can be rented in town) are some of the activities that can be done in the green landscape around the dam of Aliakmonas river, few km south of the city center.
Events
Several cultural events take place in the town such as the Theater week, the French cinema week as well as performances and concerts at the Open Theater of Alsos “Melina Merkouri”. All these events take place in the winter. During the summer, the youth of Veria carries out spectacles and concerts on the banks of Aliakmonas River.Sleep
