The history of Dharwad can be traced back to 12th century. It is just east of magnificent "Western Ghats". The District of Dharwad district is strategically located in Northern Karnataka, Dharwad-Hubli are the twin cities 15 kilometre apart from each other. This signifies how well the district has progressed financially and politically, that necessitated creation of more administrative divisions.Dharwad is surrounded of hills and there are numerous lakes and other smaller water bodies
Dharwad is quiet and peaceful city amidst lot of vegetation. It has made many people's dreams come true through its educational institutions and generous people, who have always supported poorer students. Students come here from all over North Karnataka.
Few decades ago, Dharwad district was a big district of Karnataka state. Now It has been divided into two more districts namely Gadag and Haveri. There are five taluks ( Tehsils ) in Dharwad district now Dharwad, Hubbali, Kundagol, Navalgund and Kalghatagi at present. Dharwad city is headquarters of Dharwad district.
Kannada is the main language or the mother tongue of large number of people in Dharwad district. There are people who speak Hindi, Marathi , Tulu and Urdu.
Hubli ( Hubballi ) is the main junction in Dharwad district and also the headquarter's of South Western Railway Zone of Indian Railways. Hubballi is connected to major cities of India ( Bharat ) by railway ( railroad ) services like Bengaluru, Mysuru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Varanasi,Mumbai, Madgaon ( Goa ) and Vijayawada. Dharwad and Kundgol are the other important railway stations in Dharwad district. Dharwad railway station is about 3 km from the centre of town. There is also a shuttle service between Dharwad & Hubli used by many commuters.

Dharwad district is well connected by bus services. The Karnataka state, Maharashtra state and Telangana state transport buses ply to and from Dharwad. The main new bus station ( NWKRTC ) is about 4 km from the centre of town on the Belgaum Road at Dharwad and at Gokul Road in Hubballi. The old bus stand at both the places still functions but the frequency of buses can be dodgy.
Apart from the Government run buses there many private bus operators which operate buses to Bangalore, Mysore, Pune, Mumbai, Udupi and Mangalore.

There is an airport in Hubli (HBX) in Dharwad district, There are few flights from Karnataka state capital Bengaluru and Mumbai.

City Bus service:
City bus services are operated by Karnataka government owned NWKRTC and private operators within Hubli Dharwad city. There are bus services run by NWKRTC to nearby villages from Hubballi and Dharwad.
These are the best modes of transport. Agree upon a price before starting a journey. The prices are always inflated. Reasonable fare is 75% of the asking price by the autodriver.

Visit Neerasagar lake at Dhumvada which supply's water to Dharwad and Unkal lake at Hubli which supply's water to Hubballi. Also visit Navalgund town to see the weaving of Jamkhanas or Durries or Carpets.
- Dharwad Peda's made from milk available at various sweet shop in Dharwad.
- Jamkhanas ( Rug or Carpet or Durries ) made at Navalgund. They are very beautiful and durable. Navalgund durries are Geographical Indication ( GI ) tagged.

Non alcoholic beverages are also a plenty. Many fruit juice stalls. Cleanliness of these are questionable.
